FALL programme: start xx september

Common programme: 18 ECTS

These courses are mandatory. They are a selection of courses of our international programme in Education for Sustainable Development (called IEC). Classes are followed mainly by international students.

Educating for Education: Care                                         3           Care theory and a nurturing approach to schooling has become a fundamental aspect of education. We review the ethics of care, the role of UNESCO in education and care, Paolo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
Educating for Natural Sciences: Sustainable Development In this course we will discuss global future issues related to climate change, ecocities, water management… and how education can be employed to adopt the right skills, values and sustainable attitude to safeguard our planet and our common future.
Educating for Social and Human Sciences: Human Rights and Social Justice You will acquire the knowledge of international treaties concerning basic human rights and  distinguish human rights issues in current problems occurring in the world. Topics include equality and non-discrimination, the right to liberty of person, the right to a fair trial, the right to education, the right to life and the links between human rights, world citizenship and education.
Educating for Culture: Making Cultural Diversity Work Living together in harmony and sustainable development can only happen through open dialogue among cultures, mutual respect and creativity. We will review how new forms of identities in multicultural and multi-ethnic modern societies can be built to combat prejudices and discrimination.
Educating for Communication and Information: Empowerment In this module we aim at making students aware of the impact media and ICT can have on individuals and societies. We will give special emphasis to the use of these tools for influencing the standards of education and empowering individuals and societies around the globe.
Communication for Academic Purposes You will learn how to become a more effective public speaker and presenter, and a better academic writer in English. Although the basics of writing good papers will be taught, the focus of the course is the steady growth of self-confidence in public speaking, especially in the giving of informative and persuasive presentations.

 

elective programme: 12 ects

Choose courses of the elective programme to add 12 ECTS to the common programme. The courses of the elective package are courses of the Dutch Teacher Education programme, given in English. International students follow classes together with the Flemish students. Because of scheduling reasons, students can only choose courses out of one single elective package.  So choose 12 ECTS out of one single elective package. For courses with limited amount of students we will use the “first served, first come” principle. For courses of elective package 3, there is an approval procedure.

package 2: Multilingual Education (CLIL)

Course ECTS Short description
Linguistic environments                                        3           You will gain scientific insights in how to work optimally on linguistic competences which your students. You will be looking at the applicability of multilingualism and intercultural diversity at school and translation to your own educational context.
Organising CLIL Learn how to set up and professionalize a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) course at a school. CLIL is a form of multilingual instruction, in which a non-language subject is taught in a language other than the student's native language.

package 3: Exceptional on approval

Course ECTS Short description
Project Management and Educational Planning: Theory                                       6         In this course you will learn the fundamentals of project management and educational planning. You woll receive an additional two-day training from the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), Paris on e.g. managing human resources in the education sector and financing educational projects by means of public-private partnerships.
Project Management and Educational Planning: Internship 6 During the internship, you will (1) set up an UNESCO oriented project or (2) contribute to an ongoing project in an organization working on UNESCO related themes. In both situations, you will integrate the knowledge and skills you have learned throughout the semester and implement the theory of the course Project Management and Educational Planning -Theory.
Scenarios for Dreamers for the 21st Century 3 In the future we will need to work and live together in the superdiverse, pluralistic and complex society. This will come with complex challenges. During a scenario planning process with your peer group you will address and train the necessary competencies for the future: deep listening skills, diversity-sensitive communication skills, problem solving skills, out-of-the-box thinking… towards innovative and diverse solutions that are devised for the society of the future.
