BIP: European Law & Institutions | UCLL

Enhancing legal understanding of the EU

The International Law Week brings together Bachelor students in Law from all over Europe.  The main focus of this BIP on “European Law & Institutions” is to offer students the possibility to work in mixed international groups on the composition, the competences and the functioning of the EU Institutions.  The analysis will then be applied to an interesting, actual EU legal topic, as contained in EU legislation (directives or regulations) being analysed.

Moreover, students will have to prepare a debate and discussion with respect to a current issue in a “mock European Parliament”, from the point of view of the currently existing political parties within the EP.

The working language of this week being English, the BIP challenges students to think and to communicate in a foreign language.

Programme

The online programme (between 16-20 February 2026) is limited to a number of introductory guest lectures by colleagues from the participating partner institutions, followed by a brief evaluation moment to be carried out by the students.

The on campus programme (between 2-6 March 2026) consists of a mixture of guest lectures (of, among others, a lecture given by the President of the Court of Justice of the EU, a civil servant at the EU Commission etc.), workshops,  and presentations by the students. The last day of the week, the “mock parliamentary debate” takes place at the House of Province in Leuven.  In view of the preparation of this debate, a visit is organised to the European Parliament in Brussels during a full day (and possibly the Council, or the Benelux), where we meet members of the EP, during a guided tour.  Participants are also encouraged to join a rich social and cultural programme and to meet their fellow students from other countries informally, during visits to the City of Leuven and some of its historical highlights.
