Global Citizenship & Development
Would you like to complete a long-term internship in a project in the Global South while also learning about the local culture from the inside? Do you want to understand the global context and social challenges of a country? Then this Advanced Bachelor programme may be what you are looking for.
This one-year specialization programme combines theory, practice, research, and intensive coaching before, during, and after your stay in the Global South.
Who is this programme for?
This programme is suitable for anyone:
• with a strong interest in social inequality, sustainability, globalization, and interculturality;
• who is willing to reflect critically and openly on responsible and humane action;
• who wants to actively contribute to a sustainable and just society.
A bachelor’s or master’s degree before the start of the programme.
What makes this programme unique?
The programme deliberately chooses authentic destinations that are not the most obvious choices. Students stay with local host families and complete internships without other international students present, allowing for deeper integration and language learning.
Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in a different culture and step outside their comfort zone.
You become familiar with non-Western values and new frames of reference, while also reflecting on what these experiences mean for you personally and professionally.
Study Programme
Before, during, and after the internship
The programme begins with an intensive preparation trajectory focusing on:
• development cooperation and sustainability;
• intercultural communication;
• globalization and international issues;
• local context of the host country;
• language training (French, Spanish or Portuguese).
Start of academic year: mid-September.
At the start of the program, you also choose whether to follow it in Dutch or in English (see also 'frequently asked questions').
In November, you will depart for a period of 6 months. During this practice-oriented internship in a volunteer project, you will test your knowledge and conceptual framework against the reality of a developing region.
You will make a concrete commitment within the internship organizations, but it is the total concept of living, working, and dwelling that is central to this program.
It involves an integral experience in which you:
- develop intercultural competencies
- learn to understand local phenomena through a broad macro-social and macro-political lens
- gain insight into the functioning of a project and civil society
- reflect on how you can take on an active role as a citizen in an international society
- regularly reflect on your own growth process
To this end, we focus intensively on a personal coaching trajectory in which you critically question and internalize yourself, your frame of reference, and the conceptual frameworks offered.
Internships
Development projects internship abroad
Volunteering abroad forms the heart of our program. The countries where you can do an internship are: Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Senegal, Uganda, La Réunion, Sri Lanka, and India.
The program collaborates with various partner organizations, each focusing on different themes. For example, you can teach Senegalese children, work on a surf project in India, or work with the indigenous population of Peru.
Your previous education can be a guiding factor in this, but it does not have to be. Most of our partner organizations are open to different student profiles. Interest or experience is often more important than a specific degree.

Experiences
Students experiences
Learn more about our students and their experiences abroad. They share their own experiences abroad, even during the pandemic, and how they were able to make a difference.
"I was able to get more out of it for myself than I had ever dared to dream. People always told me that such a crazy experience would change me. But I didn't realize that sufficiently during these experiences. Now, at the end, I do see that I have changed in terms of character traits. My view on certain things remains the same, but I am more motivated to take initiative and to help where needed."
"It was an experience with a lot of ups and a few downs, but I wouldn't do it any differently for the world. I have learned a tremendous amount and have grown as a person. Thank you for this unique opportunity that UCLL has offered me." "I hope that I will remember the feedback I received from my personal mentor over the past year and be able to apply it in the future. It is a shame that such interesting feedback ends after this school year. How enriching it would be if we could receive such 'objective' feedback from a mentor for life."
"I can describe this six months abroad as something magical. You learn and get so much out of it that it is completely worth all the stress beforehand. The people you meet, the customs you get to know, and especially the things you get to do there—it is fantastic, every single one of them." "Before I started this program, I actually wanted to travel, but in hindsight, this has been a much more unique experience. You are truly right in the middle of the culture and live in it for a long time."
"I also learned a great deal through my research. Many insights that I could not have gained in Belgium, and I am very grateful for that. I am certain that these experiences have also made me more sensitive to differences in power, communication, and social interaction in Belgium."
"More than before my departure to Ecuador, I feel like a global citizen now. Shortly after my internship abroad, I feel as though a part of me has been left behind in another, parallel reality."
Process for awarding a volunteer project
How do you get an internship? Follow our step-by-step guide.
Submitting an application form. After all, during the information session, you will receive a lot of general information about the program and the 'internship' component. You will also receive extensive information regarding the various internship countries during these information sessions. If you are still undecided between many different countries, we ask that you attend an information evening in any case.
As a next step, you can then decide whether you actually want to apply. After submitting the application form, a lecturer from our team will contact you. From then on, we can also start the matching process with a specific country or internship placement.
Please note! Filling out the application form is not the same as a formal enrollment. However, it does mean that you are convinced you want to participate in the program and that you are asking us to set your process in motion.
