How different phlebotomy approaches can contribute to the quality of a venipuncture

A shift in venipuncture responsibility

A venipuncture is one of the most common procedures performed in healthcare. The term ‘phlebotomy’ can be divided into a centralized and decentralized approach whereby either nursing staff or laboratory scientists are responsible for the performance of a venipuncture. This study aims to explain why a venipuncture can be done by both laboratory scientists and nursing staff. The outcome of this study is the result of existing literature reflections combined with field experiences related to this topic. Additionally, this research can be substantiated in a discussion in which links are established between aspects such as education and phlebotomy training. Either way the results of this research show that both approaches contribute with their own aspects to guarantee the quality of a venipuncture procedure.
